International law forbids child abduction in any forms and grids. However, on the international level some community members in remote parts of the world still considered this outlawed practice as their traditional norms. In the past few years owing to lack of government control on incursions of lawless communities in the Gambella region, number of young children have fallen victims of this brutal practice. Today, many remain in the hands of their abductors in some parts of south Sudan.
Nonetheless, in an attempt to curve this barbaric practice, efforts have been under way with important outcomes and I should extend my gratitude to all parties involved in rescuing and uniting some abducted children with their families under considerably difficult conditions. In particular, UNCIEF and the government of southern Sudan have done a tremendous job in locating some abducted children and the attempt to unite them with their birth parents in Gambella region after prolong psychological trauma. Without this extraordinary work of the two parties, nine young girls and boys would have not been possible to have safe return and unification with their communities in Abobo and Pinyudo.
The children above are now unified with their families as results of unforgettable work of both UNICEF in Ethiopia and the South Sudan government.
I would like again to express my sincere appreciation to the parties that have ended the ordeal of these young children. Keep the good works going as you are saving lives of innocent children worldwide.
