December 24, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Wahide Belay said the decision of Ethiopia to withdraw from Somalia is irreversible and got approval of the House of Peoples Representatives. The Ethiopian army that successfully discharged its mission in Somalia will be withdrawn.
Briefing journalists here on Wednesday the Spokesman said Ethiopia, after withdrawal of its troops, will keep on supporting activities of ensuring peace and stability in that country.
The Ethiopian army in its mission foiled the direct threat posed by extremists and the government in Asmara that had sent its destabilizing force, Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), and Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF)
The spokesman said Ethiopia as current Chair of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), member of Peace and Security Council of the African Union, active participant in UN, and international forums will continue exerting efforts to help ensure peace and stability in Somalia.
Currently, he said, the piracy at South of Red Sea and along Gulf of Eden has become major international threat. He said resolving problems on land of Somalia is the solution.
Ethiopia alone cannot continue to shoulder the responsibility that should have been the burden for the international community to share.
