December 24, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The Federal Police Commission demanded that one of former CUD leaders Bertukan Mideksa give, within three days as of Tuesday, public confirmation or denial of her allegedly having said that she had not requested pardon. It warned it would take the necessary measure against her if she failed to do so.
The Commission said in a statement Tuesday that Bertukan has acted in bad faith when she repeatedly told the foreign media that she had not made plea for pardon and that her release after having been convicted for treason was only a result of negotiation.
It said police reacted to Bertukan's media statement to have summoned and interrogated her in line with number 25 of the penal code and procedure.
Failure on the part of Bertukan to confirm or deny her statement within the period stated would mean she went back on her request for pardon at will, which in turn would entail the government's taking the necessary legal measures.
Bertukan is one of the former CUD leadership pardoned on plea and released from prison after having been convicted of charges of treason.
One of the conditions stated in their pleas for pardon was their commitment after they were released on pardon to act in compliance to the supreme law of the land and in due respect to the constitutional system, according to a report by ETV.
