July 20, 2009 (Nairobi) — Calm is slowly returning along the Isiolo - Tigania East border after Friday's banditry attack at Gambella village.

The latest conflict has left eight people dead, close to 8,000 others displaced and more than 1000 livestock stolen.

The displaced families are camping in four temporary camps in Isiolo district.

The Kenya Red Cross Society says the displaced need food, non-food items such as blankets, water and healthcare.

"The residents are already vulnerable due to prolonged drought, acute shortage of water, animal deaths and cholera outbreak experienced since the beginning of the year." Says Red Cross

The Society's Communications Manager, Titus Mung'ou says the Society's personnel are working closely with the Provincial Administration and district security team in addressing the emerging humanitarian crisis.

Displaced Families

Kambi Juu 600 families (3,000 people), Isiolo Police station 400 families (2,000 people), Ngaremara 275 families (1,375 people) and LMD 200 families (1,000 people).

In total, 1,475 (7,375 people) families

Meanwhile, Isiolo district commissioner James Kamau has appealed to those who fled their homes to return saying security has been beefed up.

A combined force of police, administration police, GSU and anti-stock theft unit is pursuing the raiders to recover over 1000 animals stolen.
