Ministry says ongoing resettlement program in Gambella State key to improve livelihoods of inhabitants

November 4, 2010 (GAMBELLA) – The Ministry of Federal Affairs said that the resettlement program launched in Gambella State would increase the development benefit of residents.

Speaking at a three-month performance evaluation conference of the state held for the past two days, Federal Affairs Minister, Dr. Shiferaw Teklemariam said the ongoing resettlement program is a key to improve the livelihoods of inhabitants of the state.

According to Dr. Shiferaw, 45,000 households that have 180, 000 family members will be resettled in 49 villages over the coming three years.

The federal government in partnership with the Gambella State has been providing capacity building training and other support to improve agricultural productivity and lift out the residents from poverty, he said.

Chief Administrator of the Gambella State, Umod Ubong, on his part said the conference will help avoid weaknesses and scale up best practices.

The two-day conference evaluated the strength and weakness of the agriculture, education, health, water and energy sectors, among others.

Senior government officials and pertinent bodies at all levels in the state took part at the conference.
