February 9, 2010 (ADDIS ABABA) — A rise in temperature in Ethiopia's already-hot South-western region has forced the regional government to change work hours in the area.
The highest weekly day and night average temperature of the region has climbed to 43.5

Celsius and 21.5 Celsius respectively, from about 40 Celsius and below 20 Celsius in the previous months, according to the Gambella Branch Office of Ethiopia's National Meteorology Agency. The state-run Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported that chief of Gambella region, Umod Ubong, Monday officially announced the change of work hours as a result of the ever- escalating daily temperature in the region. Accordingly, the new office hours of the state for the coming three months will be between 7:00 am and 11:30 am (local time), and between 4:00 pm and 6:30 pm (local time).
However, office hours in some other parts of the state will remain unchanged - 7:00 am - 12:30 pm and 3:00-5:30 pm, ENA quoted the chief as saying. With an estimated area of over 25,802 square kilometers, Gambella is a vastly low region in the South-western periphery of Ethiopia bordering Sudan. It is one of the few regional states in Ethiopia which are believed to have major oil resources.
In June 2003, Ethiopian government signed an agreement with Petronas of Malaysia for a joint exploration and development of oil resources in the Region.
Petronas then awarded the contract for seismic data acquisition to China's Zhongyuan Petroleum Exploration Bureau (ZPEB) in October of that year.
