March 22, 2010 (GAMBELLA) — A joint mission, composed of DRMFSS, OCHA, UNICEF, WFP, IOM, FAO and UNFPA, visited Gambella Region between 8 and 13 March. The team met with senior Government officials, including the Regional President and Vice President, to discuss a range of issues including the need to prepare contingency measures to respond to recurrent hazards, such as floods, in the region. The mission agreed to expand the focus of the Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan (EPRP) to reflect multi-sectoral needs, including requirements in the livelihood sector. The EPRP planning process will commence on 22 March 2010 in Gambella Region.
During the mission the team visited a camp for displaced people in Mathar to get a first-hand account of the challenges experienced by people living in this area and to determine priority needs for response. The team reports that the majority of people are very eager to return to their home district once there is an improvement in security. Immediate requirements include; provision of farm land and agricultural inputs to support food security, improvement of sanitation services and existing health facilities.
