March 28, 2010 (ADDIS ABABA) — The Ethiopian Federal Democratic Unity Forum (Forum) is the sole party fielding candidates in all the regions of the country for the upcoming national elections, it was learnt.

According to information obtained from the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), out of the 62 parties which had registered candidates, 52 had fielded 2,174 candidates for the House of Representatives while 42 parties have fielded 4,564 candidates for regional councils.
It was also learnt that some 25 candidates are running independently for seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives and 4 candidates for regional councils.
Out of the total 6,767 candidates running for the May elections, the ruling party EPRDF has fielded 501 candidates for the House of Peoples’ Representatives and 1,349 for regional Councils.
Among the opposition parties taking part in the elections, Forum is the only one which has fielded candidates in all the regions of the country with 421 candidates. It has also fielded 861candidates for regional councils in all regions except Gambella and Harreri.
According to NEBE, 29.1 million voters have registered for the elections. This figure does not include voters registered in the Somali region and higher education institutes.
