March 31, 2010 (JUBA) — The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement is still hesitating to state its position over the possibility of postponing the April elections.
GOSS Vice-President, Dr. Riek Machar, the SPLM’s deputy-chairman, spoke to journalists at Juba international Airport on Wednesday as he returned from Khartoum:
[Dr. Riek Machar]: “Concerning the result of our visit to Khartoum, as you are aware, we were discussing the petition of the parties which requested that there should be a postponement of the elections. We in the SPLM did not state our position, so we will state our position today.”
However, the SPLM’s deputy secretary-general for the Southern sector, Dr. Ann Itto had announced earlier in the day that the party was ready for the polls:
[Dr. Ann Itto]: “We sat as the SPLM leadership to look at the concerns of the other political parties in the north. We are convinced the issues they raised are genuine but the decision of the political bureau is not to postpone the elections but rather see how best these issues can be tackled and that is why I told you in the beginning that these three issues will be raised at the meeting of the presidency that will take place tomorrow. The SPLM is ready for elections, we are prepared, we have the votes and we are ready for elections.”
The SPLM sent a four-member delegation to Khartoum comprising of Dr. Riek Machar, Pagan Amum, Yasir Arman and Deng Alor to consult with the National Congress Party about the possibility of having the presidency discuss the opposition parties’ demand that the elections should be postponed.
