April 21, 2008 (ADDIS ABABA) — United World College (UWC) a global educational movement that brings together students from all over the world offered the year's scholarship opportunities in twelve world class respected colleges to Ethiopian outstanding students.

Under its 10th selection of students to win the International Baccalaureate (IB), education scholarships would be offered to the students in six colleges in USA, UK, Norwegian, Singapore, Bosnia and Swaziland, according to UWC-National Committee-Ethiopia officials.

Luladey Anagaw, Secretary of the National Committee here on Saturday said at the Sanford Community School that six to eight students would be sponsored every year.

Allowance and accommodation will be covered by the colleges whereas local donors will take the responsibility to cover Air tickets and pocket money costs, she said.

Regarding the selection she said a committee comprising volunteers from different professions, which facilitated scholarship grants and sent abroad over 60 students since the last 16 years will handle it in such a way that application form will be distributed for every preparatory schools to select best male and female students from all over the country.

"Then the committee will screen 18 out of them. The 18 pre-selected students coming from the smallest Woreda of all regions to those in the big city of Addis plunge in to a set of intellectual and practical computations to win tickets that will change their lives and contribute to the development of their country", Luladey added.

"These kids are our ambassadors, they are the future of Ethiopia," said Rita Pankhrust, a member of the UWC-NC-Ethiopia.

"The volunteer committee is the one to operate with donors, students and colleges. Some times the committee contributes from own pocket", she added.

Ethiopian Air Lines, Shell Ethiopia, Gift Trading, Ayat Real Estate and embassies are some of the main local donors.

UWC is represented by volunteer National Committees in 124 countries. It is a system which enables students to be selected from within their own communities and cultures. The National Committees are responsible for selecting students for entry to UWC Colleges and for other UWC programmes such as UWC Short Courses. Many also raise funds to supplement scholarships or to run their own programmes and courses.
