June 4, 2008 (Jimma) - Jimma community radio station, established in collaboration with the Jimma University and Media Action, an NGO based in Netherlands, has begun trial broadcast, external relation section of the university said.
Section head, Melkamu Demessa told press on Tuesday that the station commenced transmission as of May 23,2008 in Amharic and Oromifa languages for inhabitants of Jimma Town and its environs.
The station currently broadcasts 6:15-8:00am in the morning, 12:00-1:00PM at noon and 6:30-8:00pm in the evening. The station envisages expanding its airtime.
The university has allotted some 200,000 birr to run the station for two years.
The station is intended to introduce community centered philosophy to the public in Jimma and surrounding areas and address socio-economic issues.
