June 19, 2008 (Gambella) - Out of the three refugee camps in Gambella State two were closed after more than 21,700 Sudanese returned home, the Administration for Refugees and Returnees Affairs (ARRA) said.
Gambella branch Head, Estifanos Gebremedhin, said Bonga and Dimma camps were closed.
The repatriation was carried out on the basis of the tripartite agreement reached among UNHCR, the governments of Sudan and Ethiopia.
Some 20 million birr worth materials of Bonga camp were handed over to the state government and preparations have been finalized to transfer the facilities in Dimma camp next week.
The head who pointed out the existence of 21,211 refugees in Fugnido camp said the refugees would be fully repatriated to their country by 2009.
