June 26, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - Engineering Capacity Building Program (ecbp), a program established under the auspice of the Ministry of Capacity Building, disclosed that 5,000 ‘XO Laptops’ worth 940,000 USD arrived in Ethiopia as part of the “One Laptop per Child (OLPC)” Project.
Briefing journalists on OLPC Project, ecbp said on Thursday that the stated number of laptops will be distributed among students of four primary schools located in different parts of Ethiopia.
University reform manager of ecbp, Tenagne Baye said on the occasion the laptops are meant for ‘Minilik II’ and ‘Atse Naod’ Schools in Addis Ababa City, ‘Muloosayo’ and ‘Rema’ primary schools in Oromia and the Amhara States respectively.
The laptops are donated jointly by the OLPC Project and Florence City, Italy, he said, some 170 teachers drawn from the four primary schools have already received training on OLPC.
It was disclosed that text books of the students use for a variety of subjects and exercises books were prepared in digitalize format. The laptops can be operated by solar energy in the place where there is no electric power access.
OLPC is a project working to provide educational opportunities to the world’s poorest children. It also aims at providing access to libraries of knowledge, ideas experiments, and art that others have created as windows into the world.
