December 21, 2008 (Malakal) - The Assistant Minister for Humanitarian Affairs in the Government of National Unity, Ahmed Haroun, is calling on displaced persons to return to their homes and contribute to development.

On Friday in Malakal, Haroun said that only about 2 million displaced persons have returned to their homes. He said the repatriation process has been slow due to lack of funding.

According to him, the returnees lack education and health facilities as well as employment opportunities.

Haroun, who is also the secretary-general of the National Council Against Landmines, said that landmines were a serious threat to human life and have to be cleared.

He said that last week, about eighty mines were removed in various locations around Malakal town. He said mine clearance will help provide security for citizens to settle and to contribute to development projects.

Haroun was part of a high-level delegation that went to Malakal on Thursday to inspect the progress of development schemes. The delegation included ministers and officials from the ministries of Humanitarian Affairs and Transport, together with mine action groups.
