August 10, 2009 (WERNYOL) –– Wernyol has been attacked, leaving eleven people dead, six wounded, and two captured. Among the dead are four attackers and seven people from Wernyol community. The six wounded people are all from Wernyol. Three are in critical condition and three are okay.
The two captured are from the attackers. Therefore, the attackers are confirmed to be from Nuer community. Details are still coming in because the attackers are still being pursued by Wernyol youth.
The attack took place at Khir cattle camp on August 9, 2009. This is the second attack on Twich East County by Nuer community of Jonglei State. The first attack took place on July 29, 2009 when heavily armed youth from Uror County stole a cow from Nyuak community and ambushed youth from Dachuek, killing six and wounding eight others. The MPs of Uror denied the involvement of their community.
Jonglei State is plagued by tribal killings. On Augsut 2, 2009, Murle youth attacked Akobo, killing 185 people and wounding many others. The government of South Sudan has sent a high ranking delegation to assess the situation. But it is not yet clear how the government will solve the problem.
