September 4, 2009 (Khartoum) –– The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-Democratic Change has elected the founder of the party, Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, as the party leader.
After the vote on the final day of its general convention at the Friendship Palace in Khartoum on Thursday, Doctor Lam emerged as a single candidate and was not challenged by any party member. More than two thousand delegates to the congress unanimously voted for Dr. Akol as a new SPLM-DC Chairman.
The convention was attended by delegates from the twenty-five states of the Sudan and also some delegates came from the diaspora. Seven from America, six from Canada, four from Australia, two from United Kingdom, two from Scandinavia, with other delegates from Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.
The convention concluded its session with the election of 270 members to the National Council of the SPLM-DC, with each state presenting nine members, in addition to two members representing the National Women's League, the National Youth League and the National Students' League.
The participants in the convention discussed a number of issues and recommended that there was a need to organize a south-south-dialogue for all Southern political parties in order to solve the problems in southern Sudan.
