February 2, 2010 (Khartoum) — 10,000 people have been displaced in Jonglei State as violent clashes continue. Head of Southern Sudan's Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, Barnaba Gilo, confirmed that the displaced are hungry and subsisting in critical humanitarian situations. Speaking to Miraya FM, Gilo said that fighting is still continuing in Fangak. The displaced have converged in central Fangak: sleeping in the open and exposing themselves to more violent threats.
Gilo added that the situation has been further aggravated by drought across all 11 counties. The drought has caused crops to fail and hunger to prevail among people living in Jonglei. Rampant clashes coupled by hunger in the State have raised the humanitarian situation to critical. The Southern Sudan's Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner has appealed to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs in Khartoum to provide urgent assistance.
