February 9, 2010 (POCHALLA) — Murle raiders killed three SPLA soldiers in Pochalla County. On Wednesday 3 February 2010, Murle raiders killed one soldier who was herding the cattle just about two KM from town taking more than 40 heads of cattle. However, the army and civilians followed the raiders as they headed toward Akila Payam taking direction to Boma Payam of Pibor County. According to a soldier who was in the squad that followed Murle raiders, he said they caught Murle between Boi village and Odhak village. “we got the cattle from a distance and laid an ambush, but a fearful 2nd Lt who minded about the cattle not to be caught by astray  bullet in the exchange of fire blew the whistle and shouted SPLA oyee oyee before we could shoot the raiders, then they ran away and we fired RPG after them.”

Meanwhile on Sunday the 7th February 2010 at 1 PM while church goers were back from Sunday prayer services, Murle raiders have again laid an ambush just on the bank of Akobo river where soldiers and other town dwellers do take bath almost a KM from Pochalla County army Headquarters killing two soldiers and wounded two more.

Moreover, the raiders have spread all over the Anyuak land and still within the same week they have stolen cattle in Abobo Werada of Gambella Region of Ethiopia killing five Ethiopian policemen who followed them.

According to a non-commissioned Officer (NCO) who spoke on anonymity to me revealed that the armies are at threat of disintegrating. He said the armies are not happy as they are dying herding individual senior armies Officers’ cattle, “we are deployed by force to herd senior Officers’ Cattle and armies are dying here in a wrong way. We are dying in herding individuals’ animals rather than defending the civilian and country at large which we joined the army for. Take the example of Sunday death of two soldiers from Nuer tribe, the Nuer immediately wanted to fight with Dinka to avenge for the death of the two soldiers as individuals Dinka are the owners of Cattle which armies herd and die after every week here in Pochalla town from Murle raiders. When you refused deployment to herd cattle Captain Bol Mayen, the acting area Commander will deduct your one month salary just like that.”

According to another eyewitness Ajulo Obang who fetched water for the army, said soldiers are moving in tribal grouping with their guns since Sunday. We don’t see such thing when Major William Deng used to be Commander here.
