July 27, 2010 (JUBA) — The federal government through the Unity Support Funds has completed the launch of two projects in southern Sudan on Tuesday 27th July, 2010.

On Tuesday, the second Vice President of Sudan Osman Taha together with his GOSS counterpart traveled to different areas in southern Sudan to initiate the projects which were launched last months.

Speaking to journalist at Juba airport of Tuesday the vice president of the government of southern Sudan, Doctor Riek Machar said the projects launched in Central and Western Equatoria states will boost the standards of living for the residents of those areas.

[Dr. Riek Machar]: “We were in Mangalla to open a Port. This is a very important River Port because it will take the pressure off Juba. You know when barges come from Kosti, they spend a lot of time between Mangalla and Juba. Now that Mangalla port is opened, most of the barges will stop at Mangalla. The main port for Juba will be Mangalla. We also launched the start of the seventy five kilometer road from Mangalla to Juba. And that will be completed within six months. When we finish that we went to Maridi. In Maridi there are two projects; the dam and the water project itself. This is very important because the health of the people will change. Tourists can now go to the place and they will find it a healthy place. The Maridi people can then get more money from that movement of tourists.”

Doctor Machar added that Mangalla can now be surveyed as a business hub.

The projects are intended to make unity attractive for the people of southern Sudan as they decide to vote in a referendum that would either see Sudan split or remain united as it is currently.
