Vote Counting Begun in Fugnido Refugee Center

January 17, 2011 (GAMBELLA) – The Southern Sudan Referendum Commission (SSRC) said vote counting begun in Fugnido Refugee Center in Gambella State.

SSRC Representative in Ethiopia, Opiew Obang Kwot told press on Sunday that voting was held from 9-15 January, 2010 in two polling stations of the Center.

Some 96 percent of 5,523 voters have already cast their votes.

Southern Sudanese people living in Ethiopia voted in Addis Ababa, Gambella and Assosa for the referendum from 9 to 15 January 2011.

Ethiopia is one of the eight countries, where Voting for out of Country Voting (OCV) for the 2011 Southern Sudanese Referendum is taking place.

The total number of the registered eligible south Sudanese voters is 60,241 in eight overseas countries including Ethiopia.

The preliminary results for the entire Referendum are due to be declared by the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission on 1, February 2011, with appeals to be submitted until 4 February 2011.
