June 21, 2011 (BOR) - Over 500 cattle were raided on Saturday in Duk County of Jonglei State. Local authorities accused Murle tribe behind the attacks as they left a woman dead in the confrontation.

John Awei, the Youth Secretary of Twich East County in Panyagor informed Gurtong yesterday after visiting the County. He said that the raiders launched a surprise attack at around 1pm as the incident was realized 3 hours later shortly after the raiders had left.

The information was relayed to media late due to inaccessibility and poor road network in the County where the raid took place.

Awei said that Murle’s Saturday’s raid was no news especially in the Counties of the South Sudan’s largest State, Jonglei. Many tribes neighbouring the Pibor and Murle stay in fears day and night due to surprise attacks.

The Murle have in tj;he past been accused of killings, cattle raid, child abduction and torching of houses.

Local authorities have termed the continued attacks associated with the Murle tribe to be a serious insecurity threat compared to militia associated acts in the State.

Authorities in Jonglei have accused the State and the Government of Southern Sudan, GOSS for not carried out proper disarmament in Pibor, Murle. Victims believe the presence of the guns in the hands of Murle act as strong motive for their activities.

The cattle keepers and tribes in Jonglei State have called for government intervention against the matter.

The insecurity situation according to the locals creates tension and panic as they accuse the GOSS of not responding swiftly to protect her people in a time when independence is just a fortnight away
