May 9, 2008 (KHARTOUM) – Recall that there were delays in the past of taking people to Pchalla. Finally after those repeated delays some 45 Anyuaks will be repatriated to Pochalla County in Joungeli State of South Sudan this week. Upon their arrival at Juba Airport the returnees will immediately take another plane heading to Pochalla. The plane is believed to be waiting for them in Juba.
The first batch composed of 30 people will leave Khartoum for Juba on Friday ( 9th of May 2008). Then on Saturday , another 15 people will also be transported to Juba.
All the returning Anyuaks are only allowed to carry fifty kilos of luggage. This decision caused a lot of complaints from the returnees. Till this moment, as this report is being compiled, no sign of resolution. “ We are not going on a picnic trip, we are going back home”, complained one returnee.
It is not clear whether the rest of 75 registered Anyuak people will be able to return to Pochalla. Most of the returnees have been living in North Sudan for more than a decade.
Despite, the great joy on the faces of the returnees, there are hidden suspicions regarding various issues such as insecurity, lack of hospitals, lack of schools and basic services.
Many of the returnees will have to start their life from zero and it will take time to cope with the new life in the areas of their return.
Pochalla remains on the top list of the areas that need much development in South Sudan. It has no roads that link it with other towns of the region. This will hinder the process of development in the region. The GoSS has done nothing to bring development to the People of Pochalla County town and the areas surrounding it.
Pochalla county needs a lot of development projects that will transform the life of the indigenous people. Because of isolation not many NGO’s are willing to work in that area.
Last February a secondary school was opened for the first time in Pochalla. The project was carried out by Pochalla County Community.
