December 1, 2008 (WARAP) — The head of HIV/AIDS commission in Wau, Lino Paskwale, says HIV and AIDS is increasing among women in Wau, the main town of Western Bahar el Gazal state.
[Lino Paskwale]: “The disease is here in Western Bahr el Gazal state, mostly among young people. One hundred and six people were infected between January and October - 70 women and 36 men. Many people don’t come for testing to the VTC centers because of the stigma attached to the disease. Many people, including children, are dying because of a lack of awareness. They do not know that if they come to the hospital they will be given medicines and they will live longer.
Paskwale added that most of the HIV/AIDS cases in Wau hospital come from outside the town and include people from Kwajok in Warap state, Rumbek and Northern Bahar el Gazal.
He said that most of the people affected are between the age of 16 and 40.
He urged young people to be responsible and encouraged them not to have sex with more than one partner.
Paskwale said the increase began in January.
