December 1, 2008 (JUBA) — The Government of South Sudan (GoSS) Minister of Roads and Bridges, Honourable David Deng Athorbei, has reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritise the construction of roads in the 2009 budget.

The minister said that priority will be given to inaccessible roads linking counties and states and named Mapuordit, Aluakaluak and Pagarau access roads to Unity State as the ones to be given priority before the next rainy season in 2009.

He announced that the President of South Sudan, His Excellency Salva Kiir will soon launch the Terkeka-Yirol road that passes Leer County in Unity State. The road will access oil production areas in the state.

The minister said that the SPLM was committed to liberate the people of South Sudan from poverty and infrastructural development being the backbone of development, would be given priority.

He added that linking Upper Nile and Lakes states would enhance security as it would be easier to tackle banditry in the border points.

”We cannot pursue development without initiating the infrastructure to support that goal. Having good road networks will enable us fasten the movement of people as well as goods and services”, said the roads minister.

The Minister added that proper utilisation of the Shambe Port (internal regional sea port) would see more development in South Sudan and called for co-operation of all stakeholders.

He appealed to the residents of both Greater Yirol Counties to avoid violence and co-exist peacefully in order to realise the envisaged development in South Sudan.
