December 2, 2008 (Khartoum) - The SPLM and the National Congress Party have agreed to amend press and publication legislation to reduce the risk of government censorship.
GOSS Minister of Legal Affairs and Constitutional Development, Makuei Lueth, said the amended law will favor journalists and publishers.
[Michael Makuei]: “We have agreed the amendments to the Press and Publications Act. We have agreed on this law and this law has been amended in the interest of journalists and publishers because you cannot leave press and publishing freedom in the hands of government if you want to talk about democratic transformation."
Lueth said that the new legislation will be presented to the National Assembly for ratification before the end of the year.
He added that the NCP had accepted three out of the nine amendments presented by the SPLM since October but refused to amend the National Security Act.
The SPLM had suggested that the authorities should not arrest people without an arrest warrant but the NCP opposes the idea.
Mr. Lueth added that the two parties failed to agree on criteria for appointing the chief of national security and the number of his deputies.
